8 Things Not to Do During Your Periods

Cravings for ice creams, rising mood swings, sudden fits of tears, flying tempers along with cutlery and pillows – sigh! Your periods are here. It’s the worst of times, isn’t it?

To make this time bearable and to not increase the agony, here’s a list of things that you can avoid during your periods:

1. Getting Waxed

Yes, that's right! Waxing is painful as it is and so are periods, so why combine the two? So stay away from the salons for another week.
2. Sweet cravings

The cravings are at a peak, and we know you want to reach out to that comfort food but here is a word of advice – don’t! Those sugar cravings that you get are ageing you. Too much sugar ages your skin makes it dull, impedes its elasticity which means- wrinkles! Gasp!
3. Starving

Starving or skipping meals is also not a good idea during your menstruation. You’re already feeling weak, not eating can make it worse and leave you less energetic than before. You’re losing a lot of blood so make sure you eat healthy foods and on time to replenish your body.
4. Smoking

Ok, so the jury is out on this one – smoking is bad no matter what. Period. (No pun intended!). Before, during or after, smoking worsens menstruation cramps. So, unless you want to buckle down in pain, we advise you to stay away from those cancer sticks.
5. Drinking

Quite naturally, drinking is also a big NO on this list. While drinking in moderation is ok, drinking too much can lead to severe cramps, mood swings, and changes in blood glucose levels. These can aggravate your attitude and lack of interest. So, stay away from your poison for a while.
6. Unprotected sex
Many women believe that you can’t get pregnant while you’re menstruating. It is probably one of the biggest myths. You can ovulate before your period is over, and this makes you more susceptible to pregnancy. Also, chances of infections have to be factored in.
7. Over cleaning

Oprah once declared on her show that the vagina is a ‘self-cleaning oven’ – funny as that may sound, it’s quite true! So, stop cleaning your ‘area’ over and over again during periods. Let the good bacteria stay there. It helps with the dryness brought on by your pads.
8. Wearing the same pad/tampon

While some of the brands claim they can be used the whole day without causing stains, the need to change is more than just staining. You need to change pads or tampons every 3-4 hours to avoid infections, bad odour, and bad bacteria. Staying hygienic during periods is quite essential!
